Normally tourists by bus to Badaling drove to visit the wonders of the world. Here the wall was specially restored for visitors. However, it is very touristy, artificial and crowded with souvenir shops. Surely no area to be here waiting for you!
The best way to a sense of the overwhelming size of the structure to maintain is a hike from Jinshanling to Simatai. This place is about 90 km north of Beijing . You can book this trip in hotels and local tour operators ( costs about 15 € with lunch ).
Small buses take you directly to wall later after the walk and lunch, back again. The 10 mile hike, however, is exhausting! You walk about 4 hours of restored and original parts of the wall uphill and downhill. However, it is worth it all!
